School exclusion

This page provides an introduction to school suspensions and exclusions

Schools can exclude pupils who break the school rules.  An exclusion means that a child is not allowed in school for a disciplinary reason

There are two types of exclusion

  • Suspension - previously called Fixed Period Exclusion – this means that a pupil is not allowed in school for a specified number of days because they have breached the school's behaviour policy.
  • Permanent exclusion – this means that the Headteacher has decided that a pupil should not continue at the school because of a one-off serious breach or persistent breaches of the school's behaviour policy and that allowing the pupil to remain in school would harm the education or welfare of the pupil or others in the school.
